I liked the premise of the new movie “Tuner,” but the climax of the story seemed a little too convenient. Like, the catalyst that made things come crashing down on the main character seemed so improbable that it kind of took me out of the movie.
In “Tuner,” Leo Woodall plays a gifted piano tuner who discovers that his heightened hearing also makes him great at cracking safes, which ultimately turns his life upside down.
What I liked best about the movie was the romance between Leo Woodall and Havana Rose Liu’s characters. I thought that anchored the story, so it wasn’t just about breaking into safes.
I also enjoyed the relationship between Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman’s characters. However, I think Hoffman was a little underutilized. He’s such a great actor, but he really just played a wacky uncle archetype in this.
Other than the convenient plot points, I’d say my least favorite aspect of the film was the ending. I just wish the main character could have found a way to stick it to the robbers in a better way in the end, like somehow stole all their money.
All in all, though, the movie was pretty good. I wouldn’t say you need to see it in theaters, but it could be a good film to watch at home once it’s on streaming.
