If you like queer love stories and original horror movies, I think you should add the new film “Leviticus” to your list! It follows two teenage boys who must escape a violent entity that takes the form of the person they desire the most.
The gag
What I liked best about “Leviticus” was how original the premise was and how it tied in a lot of religious themes. It really embodied how hard it is to grow up queer in a conservative family.
I also liked the romance aspect of the movie. I thought the relationship was believable for two teenage boys, you know, outside of the whole curse thing.
Plus, I thought the horror aspects were really well done and I liked how they were slowly introduced throughout the film. I especially enjoyed the scene they shot in a photo booth in a roller-skating rink. I thought it was really unique and captivating.
The drag
My biggest issue with the movie was that we didn’t really get any resolution with the man who performed the ritual that cursed the boys, like who he was or how he did what he did to them.
I also think there were a few plot holes regarding the curse. For example, I think the two boys could have come up with ways to make sure the other one wasn’t the evil entity. Like, they would have known they were safe if the other boy just started running away in fear.
Also, I think the mother character was extremely underdeveloped, and I’m actually surprised that Mia Wasikowska decided to play her. She used to be a pretty big actress, and this role didn’t measure up to her abilities.
The verdict
In the end, I did enjoy “Leviticus” quite a bit. It’s only about an hour and a half long, and I think it’s definitely worth a watch. If you’ve already seen the film, let me know what you thought of it in the comments!
