‘Masters of the Universe’ spoiler-free movie review

As someone who didn’t really grow up watching anything with He-Man, I had very low expectations for the new “Masters of the Universe” movie and if I’m being honest, I was really just there to see Nicholas Galitzine in the costume, which did not disappoint.

As for “Masters of the Universe,” the movie tells the origin story of He-Man, including how he got separated from his home world of Eternia and then returned to save the planet from his nemesis, Skeletor.

I’d say the movie actually does a good job introducing the world of He-Man for those of us who aren’t familiar with the past TV shows or movies. I definitely feel like I have a better sense of who He-Man is and I was actually surprised by how much of a loveable dweeb he started out as.

I also appreciated the unique style of the movie. They definitely leaned into the vibrant colors and dramatic costumes, which I think separates it from other recent superhero films.

My biggest critique of the movie would be that most of the jokes did not land. There were a few comedic moments, but I wish it was way funnier, like the “Guardians of the Galaxy” or “Deadpool” films.

And aside from the movie being far too long, my other big issue with the film was that I thought Alison Brie was miscast as Skeletor’s sidekick, Evil-Lyn. I usually appreciate her performances, but she seemed out of place here and it kind of took me out of the movie.

I’d say “Masters of the Universe” is worth a watch if you’re a big fan of the franchise or if you’re interested in being introduced to the world. Otherwise, I’d probably say you could skip it.
