I think “Hoppers” is the best original movie that Pixar has made in the past decade. I liked some of their recent sequels better, like “Inside Out 2” and “Finding Dory,” but I was very happy with this new film.
The synopsis
In “Hoppers,” an animal lover named Mabel uses a new technology to “hop” her consciousness into a robotic beaver so she can communicate with animals. She then rallies a forest full of critters to face off against a local mayor who’s threatening to destroy their habitat.
The gag
The biggest highlight of the film for me was the dynamic between the animals in the forest. The animators did a fantastic job of building this world full of silly animals that had an interesting hierarchy and funny rules.
Another thing I loved was how the “hopping” technology kept coming back into play to further the plot. I found the concept really fun and I wish I could just hop into a robot and hangout with animals too.
The drag
My biggest critique would be that it took a little too long for the protagonists to face the final conflict and once they did, it all wrapped up a little too quickly.
And, for as much as I love a movie about saving the environment, I kind of wish it talked about other environmental issues as well.
The verdict
Those are just some nitpicky comments. I really liked “Hoppers” and highly recommend it if you like funny, action-packed animated movies.
