Charli XCX’s new mockumentary “The Moment” is for those of us who grew up loving the Spice Girls movie. They’re both campy films about pop stars navigating intense fame while gearing up for important concerts.
The synopsis
In “The Moment,” Charli XCX stars as herself as she deals with the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut. And it’s ultimately about the intersection of capitalism and artistry.
The gag
I thought the movie perfectly encapsulated the “Brat” era and it was a great way to say goodbye to that album cycle. “Brat” was so successful that I feel like it’s going to be hard for Charli to follow it up with a normal album, so I’m happy she’s pivoting to movies like this and the “Wuthering Heights” soundtrack. I think it allows the dust to settle with “Brat” before she releases her next big studio album.
I’d say my favorite parts of “The Moment” were the celebrity cameos. Specifically, I found the scenes with Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, and Alexander Skarsgard to be really funny. They all played off of Charli’s personality really well.
The drag
I’d say my biggest critique of the film would be that it slowed down towards the middle and lost a little momentum. It just seemed like they spent a little too much time deciding on which direction they were going to take the tour. I wish that decision was made a little quicker, so they could have moved on and focused more on the antics that followed.
The verdict
Other than that, I had a great time watching “The Moment,” so I gave it 8/10 stars. I think you’ll love it too, if you’re a Charli fan. If you’re not, you still might enjoy the comedy of it all or the fame commentary.
