Although it’s described as a horror thriller, I thought the best parts of the new movie “Send Help” were the dark comedic moments when Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien were able to play off of their characters’ power dynamics.
“Send Help” follows two colleagues who become stranded on a deserted island, where they have to overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it’s a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive. (Trailer below)
I really enjoyed how the movie examined power dynamics. Dylan O’Brien’s character holds a lot of power in the office, but on the island, the roles are reversed and it was fun to see Rachel McAdams’ character take control in creative ways.
I also liked that this was a survival movie because I automatically started to think about what I would do if I was in a similar situation, and even though I’ve watched a lot of “Survivor,” I don’t think I would make it very long.
My biggest critique of the movie would be that it was a little corny and predictable at times, especially the ending. I kind of wish things went off the rails a little bit more.
Also, there were certain scenes where the visual effects didn’t measure up to the storytelling and they were distractingly bad.
All in all, though, I had a fun time watching “Send Help” and I think you will too if you’re a fan of the two lead actors and enjoy dark comedies.
