The new movie “Weapons” is told in a nonlinear way, jumping between various characters whose stories intersect to tell a larger narrative. I don’t normally like this kind of storytelling because it can feel disjointed, but the different perspectives are weaved together so well in this film that it makes the climax even more impactful.
“Weapons” is the latest movie from “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger. The film follows a community searching for answers after an entire class of students mysteriously vanishes one night except for one student.
It’s kind of giving “The Leftovers,” the HBO show where 2% of the population disappears, and the ending of the movie is also so jaw-dropping that it reminded me of “The Substance.”
My favorite part of “Weapons” is the Aunt Gladys character, played by Amy Madigan. She was just so original and creepy, I feel like she’s going to be the big Halloween costume this year.
I also loved how the movie starts with a child narrating. I thought it set up the film perfectly and it was instantly iconic.
My biggest problem with the movie is that I feel like they weren’t looking too hard for these kids, especially if they’re all running around in a big group. I think at least one person’s security system would have seen where they all went.
Other than that, I really didn’t have many critiques of this film. It’s probably my favorite horror movie so far this year because it’s more of a mystery thriller.
