‘Too Much’ series review

I’ve seen people calling “Too Much” the new “Girls,” obviously because they’re both created by Lena Dunham, but I didn’t like the new Netflix show nearly as much as I thought I would.

“Too Much” is a romantic comedy starring Meg Stalter that’s loosely inspired by Dunham’s own life. The show follows a woman in her 30s named Jessica who moves from New York to London in the wake of a painful breakup. There, she meets Felix, played by Will Sharpe, who she ends up building a romantic connection with and that relationship is  tested in more ways than one.

The series is kind of giving “Girls”-era chaos but without the friendship dynamics that grounded that show. But don’t get me wrong, “Too Much” had its funny moments and I thought the millennial satire was spot on.

My favorite part of the show was when they explored what happened with the main character’s previous relationship. That felt the most authentic and that’s when Meg Stalter did her best acting. There were several emotional scenes where I thought she was really dropped in and believable.

I was surprised that I didn’t absolutely love this show because I enjoy Meg Stalter on “Hacks” and on her social media, but I think her brand of comedy is better suited to supporting characters. She’s more of a cringe comic and 10 episodes of that was kind of a lot.

Also, I found myself not fully rooting for the relationship between the two main characters to work out. Just like with Adam Driver in “Girls,” the relationship seemed a little off, like there was more conflict between them than actual love.

In the end, I didn’t love the show as much as I thought I would, but it was still a fun watch and I would stream a second season if it got one.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
