‘Together’ movie review

Written by:

I really love the concept of the new movie “Together,” starring Dave Franco and Allison Brie. On its face it’s just about a couple’s bodies fusing together, but it actually explores how co-dependency and monogamy can start to blur two lives into one, and the ramifications of that.

The film follows a long-term couple who find themselves at a crossroads as they move to a small town and abandon all that is familiar in their lives except each other. Then they end up encountering a mysterious, unnatural force that threatens to corrupt their lives, their love and their flesh.

It’s giving “The Substance” meets “Marriage Story.” It has tons of body horror and supernatural elements, but it’s grounded in the relationship between the two characters and how they’re determining if they want to stay together or not.

I loved how the supernatural elements of the movie mirrored the relationship dynamic where they were turning into the same person.

The movie was also a lot funnier than I thought it would be. I was prepared for a straight up horror movie, but the couple had great comedic chemistry, probably because they’re together in real life.

My biggest critique of this film is that the callbacks are a little obvious and cheesy. I also think the final scene could have been handled differently. I would have liked it better if it was more ambiguous what happened to them.

With that said, I still definitely recommend seeing this film, especially if you like paranormal movies that mix comedy, horror and romance.
