Have you ever been stuck in your own life and not even realized it until someone held up a mirror? That’s the premise of the A24 movie “Sorry, Baby” and the story is told really beautifully.
The movie follows a woman who goes through something traumatic and she realizes how much it impacted her when a close friend visits her and shares news about a major milestone in her life.
It kind of has a similar vibe to “The Holdovers,” in that it’s shot in an academic setting and it tells the intimate story of a young adult. It also has similar themes as the shows “A Teacher” and “I May Destroy You.”
My favorite part of the movie was the relationship dynamic between the main character and her best friend. The two actresses had great chemistry and I loved the unrelenting support their characters had for each other, especially in dark circumstances.
I also liked how the filmmakers handled the actual traumatic event. It was subtle, but it got the point across in a really impactful way.
I’d say my least favorite thing about the movie was the long, lingering shots. There were several of them and I’m sure they’re there for artistic reasons, but I just don’t have the attention span for that. My mind starts wondering.
Overall, though, I really enjoyed “Sorry, Baby.” The performances were spectacular, and I love slice of life films like this.
