‘Freakier Friday’ movie review

“Freaky Friday” broke box office numbers in my house growing up. Our DVD put in some serious work, so I was excited to go see the sequel “Freakier Friday.” And let me tell you, I had a great time watching the movie, but it’s not without its faults.

In “Freakier Friday,” Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprise their roles as mother and daughter and the story picks up years after they switched bodies the first time. Now, Lindsay Lohan’s character has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. This time around, the four of them switch bodies and must learn lessons to switch back.

It’s kind of giving “Hocus Pocus 2” because all the parts are there that we loved from the original and there are some funny moments, but it’s mainly just running on nostalgia.

The scenes with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis were definitely the highlight for me. They played teenagers trapped in older bodies and that led to some excellent comedy, especially the scenes in the record store and the pharmacy.

Vanessa Bayer from SNL also showed up as a fortune teller and she was probably the funniest part of the movie for me.

My biggest critique of the film is that it was kind of hard to keep up with which character was in which body. It was eventually easier to keep them straight as the movie went on, but it was a little rough in the beginning.

Another problem I had was that Lindsay Lohan’s character was portrayed as old and out of touch, when she’s still in her 30s. In one scene, she acted like a bumbling idiot who didn’t know how to work her phone, but she would have grown up with technology.

Also, the way the family members switched bodies wasn’t really tied to the fortune cookies like in the first movie, which I thought was odd. The filmmakers probably wanted something original, but they could have connected the inciting incidents better somehow.

Anyway, those are just some nitpicky complaints. I still thought “Freakier Friday” was a fun watch and I think you’ll like it if you’re a fan of the original. If you’re not, this might not be the movie for you.
