‘Dying for Sex’ series review

The FX miniseries “Dying for Sex” had some truly funny moments, but it was outnumbered by darker scenes that weighed down the comedy drama.

Michelle Williams stars as a woman who is diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, which leads her to leave her husband and begin exploring her sexual desires for the first time in her life. She gets support to go on the adventure from her best friend, played by Jenny Slate, who stays by her side until the very end.

The series kind of gave “My Sister’s Keeper” or “Miss You Already” vibes.

I will say that the show was a little darker than I expected or wanted. Along with the cancer storyline that I was prepared for, there was also a subplot about molestation that I didn’t enjoy but I guess was needed for the main character’s backstory.

As the title suggests, there were quite a lot of sex scenes, but most of them were shot comedically or there was a dark undertone to them. I would have preferred a little more romance mixed in.

And the ending is obviously quite sad. It actually left me with an emotional hangover for the rest of the day. So, be prepared for that.

I’d say it’s worth a watch if you’re a fan of the two leads or are just looking for a good cry. If you’re interested, the show is streaming on Hulu.
