A new gay film is now available on Hulu and it reminds me of the LGBT movies of the 2010s that were the perfect blend of cute and cheesy.
It’s called “A Nice Indian Boy.” It follows an Indian doctor who falls in love with a white artist and brings him to meet his traditional family, who eventually learns to accept their relationship and helps the couple plan the Indian wedding of their dreams.
It’s kind of giving “Love Simon,” “GBF,” or any of the other heartwarming rom-coms made in the 2010s that helped normalize queer relationships. Gay movies are pretty commonplace now, but for a while, it was these kinds of movies that gave queer people representation.
What I liked best about this film was the depiction of the family. It was interesting to see a gay relationship through the lens of two traditional Indian parents.
This movie also just felt so cozy and comforting to watch.
I’d say the thing I liked least about the film was the clunky dialogue. It was a little cringy at times, but that’s to be expected with movies like this.
I also thought the movie could have used a few more scenes to develop the relationship between the two leads. It seems like they go from meeting to being engaged pretty quickly.
With all that said, this movie is pretty adorable. It’s not award-worthy, but I think it’s worth streaming if you’re just looking for something cute and digestible.
