“Zootopia 2” was very cute, but I walked away from the movie with one major question: Where exactly are we drawing the line with which animals are sentient? Like, some of the characters are shown eating grubs and fish that aren’t given personalities like the other animals. Did they not have feelings and families too? I couldn’t stop thinking about that.
The Disney sequel follows two rookie cops as they work to solve a mystery about a snake that turns the city of animals upside down.
My favorite part of the film was how they expanded the Zootopia universe by introducing new neighborhoods with different animals.
I also loved how the movie played on small things that are different for the animals than they are for humans, like one scene where we see a snake family’s house, with height measurements low on a wall because they’d be so low to the ground.
The cast was also spectacular. Andy Samberg and Fortune Feimster were great additions, and Quinta Brunson made a funny cameo.
As for critiques, I will say that the actual animation wasn’t that groundbreaking. It seemed pretty basic to me as opposed to films like “Into the Spider-Verse” that are taking more creative risks.
And unfortunately, the story seemed a little watered down as opposed to the first film. It just kind of felt like a safe plot that ended pretty predictably.
With all that said, “Zootopia 2” was still very charming and funny. I’d say if you liked the first one, you’ll like this one too.
