You certainly don’t have to be a Shakespearean scholar to enjoy the new movie “Hamnet,” but knowing the basic plot of the play “Hamlet” might make the end of the film more impactful for you.
In simple terms, the play is a tragedy about the Prince of Denmark’s quest for revenge after his father’s ghost reveals he was murdered by his uncle. If that sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s what “The Lion King” was based off of.
With that said, this new film tells the backstory of how Shakespeare used his own heartbreak to create that famous play, which explores themes of grief and father-son relationships.
I found the new movie heartbreakingly beautiful. The performances absolutely broke me. Specifically, the acting from Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, and the boy who played their son really blew me away. I totally see why Buckley is the favorite to win Best Actress at the Oscars.
You sincerely won’t want to miss this film when it comes out nationally on Nov. 26, especially if you like a good cry. I welled up at least twice, once in the middle and again at the end. I found it extremely moving and had to pull myself together before exiting the theater.
Additionally, the score and the way the film was shot only enhanced the rich atmosphere that the director, Chloe Zhao, created to tell this story. I think she and all the people behind those crafts deserve Oscar nominations as well.
I have very little critiques for this movie. The only things I’d say are that some people might find it slow at times and there’s a scene where you’re watching actors perform “Hamlet” which could be confusing if you’re not familiar with the play.
Other than that, I loved “Hamnet.” It’s probably one of my top films of the year.
