Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in the new movie “Die My Love” proved once again why she’s one of the best actresses of our generation.
In the film, Lawrence plays a new mother who moves into an old country house with her partner, played by Robert Pattinson, and she begins to unravel amid the pressures of domestic life, leaving a path of destruction in her wake.
I’ve never seen a movie quite like “Die My Love,” but if I were to compare it to anything, I’d say it’s kind of giving “Mother!” meets “The Lost Daughter” because it explores themes like new motherhood and madness in a beautifully unsettling way.
The best part of the movie was seeing the main character slowly descend into a depressive state. The filmmakers don’t outright say she’s suffering from postpartum, but it’s hinted at throughout and that’s something we don’t see portrayed a lot in films.
I just loved how the movie showed how hard it can be to be a young parent juggling motherhood and a relationship while also pursuing your passions.
The way the film was shot was also so beautiful and unique. My favorite shots were in the simple scenes with the two main characters moving around animalisticly.
At the end of the day, this is more of an art film, so anyone expecting a blockbuster with a cookie cutter narrative should adjust their expectations.
As for my critiques of the film, I do wish there were one or two more external conflicts introduced to the characters. Lawrence does a good job with the internal conflicts, but something like a fight with a family member could have externalized it a bit more.
I’d also say some of the CGI could have been better. Specifically, the fire in the film looked extremely fake and I feel like I’ve noticed that a lot in other recent movies too.
Overall though, this was one of my favorite movies of the year and I highly suggest it, especially if you’re a big fan of Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson like me. They were both firing on all cylinders in the film.
