‘Overcompensating’ season 1 review

To borrow a phrase from Benito Skinner himself, I would say the new Prime Video show “Overcompensating” is toe-curling-ly good.

The comedy transported me back to college in the 2010s, where I too was navigating how to come out as gay, and I loved how the series approached the subject in a deeply funny and relatable way.

Benito Skinner – aka Benny Drama – created, wrote and stars in the show that follows a closested former football player and his friends as they navigate their first semester away from home.

From bad hookups and fights with friends, the series explores how we can all overcompensate while we work to find out who we really are.

Along with Benny, the show stars Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco, and Rish Shah. There are also a bunch of recurring characters who steal the show, especially the roommate, Hailee, who was my favorite.

Even if you’re not familiar with Benny’s videos or his podcast, I think you’ll enjoy this show. It’s the perfect blend of raunchy comedy and heartwarming storylines.

I thought it seemed really high quality, like something you’d see on HBO, which makes sense because it was produced by A24.

Plus, Charli XCX served as the show’s executive music producer and she did a fabulous job. Not only is it packed with her songs, it also included a lot of other pop hits from that era.

And if you’re looking for something quick, the show is really bingeable, with only eight half-hour episodes. I personally burned through them in a day and I plan to rewatch.

The one criticism I do have is that I wish the show moved at a quicker pace when it came to the main character exploring his sexuality. I’m hoping they’ll dive more into that with some more love interests if there’s a season two.

A second season hasn’t yet been announced, but Benny said he already has it all planned out. So, fingers crossed it gets renewed!
