The Academy recently announced that its members must now watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round for the Oscars.
I think a lot of movie fans like me thought this was already a requirement, but apparently not.
Variety reports that the Academy will track viewership through its members-only streaming platform, which is called the Academy Screening Room.
For films viewed outside that platform, members will submit an online form stating when and where they saw a movie.
The goal is to reduce “coattail voting,” where voters support a nominee based on reputation or buzz without seeing the film, which can result in some of the best work being overlooked.
This new rule will only affect final voting, not the nomination phase.
Personally, I’m happy they’re making this change and I’m surprised it wasn’t the case before now.
