‘The Wedding Banquet’ (2025) movie review

The new romantic comedy “The Wedding Banquet” doesn’t fully deliver on the romance OR the laughs. On paper, the movie has everything I want: queer relationships, family drama and silly banter, but I found the whole thing kind of stiff.

The film is a remake of a 1993 movie of the same name. It follows a lesbian couple with infertility issues and a gay couple facing the threat of an expired student visa.

The antics ensue when one of the gay men offers to pay for IVF treatments if one of the lesbians agrees to marry him for a green card. Then, their plans to elope are upended when the groom’s grandmother flies in from Korea, insisting on a wedding extravaganza.

Don’t get me wrong, the movie does have funny parts. I just wish there were more of them and that they hit a little harder.

The best scenes in the film are the ones that include the mother and grandmother. Their storylines were the most impactful and touching.

My biggest issue with this film is the acting. The man who played the groom had terrible line delivery and even Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone wasn’t very good.

Overall, I’d say the movie is just okay. If you’re interested in watching it, I’d suggest you wait to stream it at home.
