‘Song Sung Blue’ movie review

I think “Song Sung Blue” would have been an alright movie if they would have cut down some of the music. The actual drama was entertaining, but anytime they started singing, I was just hoping for it to end.

“Song Sung Blue” is based on a true story about two down-on-their-luck musicians who form a Neil Diamond tribute band and learn it’s never too late to find love or follow your dreams.

My favorite parts of the movie were the more dramatic scenes where Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman were able to flex their acting muscles. I actually got a little bit emotional when the story shifted to talking about addiction and recovery because, like a lot of people, I’ve had family members go through similar struggles.

And while I didn’t like the majority of the songs that were performed during the movie, Neil Diamond’s bigger hits like “Sweet Caroline” and “I’m a Believer” were still pretty entertaining.

The rest of the songs, though, were pretty boring and they were way too long. I would have preferred it if the songs were shortened or even edited into montages. That would have been more palatable and would have shortened the more than two-hour runtime.

And overall, the film was just too cheesy and the plot was very predictable. There were cute and funny moments, but they were weighed down by the corny dialogue.

“Song Sung Blue” film releases in theaters nationwide on Christmas Day, but I’d probably skip it unless you’re a big Neil Diamond fan and can appreciate all the music.
