‘The Four Seasons’ season 1 review

The new Netflix series “The Four Seasons” features a gay couple with a dynamic that we haven’t seen very much on screen. They’re in an open relationship and it’s actually not the source of their marital problems. In fact, the show treated it really casually which is refreshing because it’s pretty common in the gay community.

“The Four Seasons” is a romantic comedy series created by Tina Fey, inspired by a 1981 movie of the same name.

The show focuses on the ups and downs of three married couples across spring, summer, fall and winter. Their friendships are tested when one couple divorces and complicates their tradition of quarterly weekend getaways.

Along with Tina Fey, the cast includes Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Will Forte, and Kerri Kenney-Silver. Kenney-Silver is the standout for me—her character Anne has the best mix of comedy and emotional depth, and she nails both.

Overall, I appreciate how the show explores the complexities of long-term relationships with humor and heart. With that said, it can feel a little mundane at times, and it’s not packed with the rapid-fire jokes you might expect from Tina Fey’s earlier work like “30 Rock” or “Mean Girls.”

The writing doesn’t quite reach the sharpness of “The White Lotus” or “The Studio,” but it’s still worth a watch. It’s full of funny, touching moments, and with just eight 30-minute episodes, it’s an easy, satisfying binge.
