This isn’t a popular opinion, but I think “Sinners” might be the most overrated movie of the year so far.
I should have known it wasn’t for me by the trailer, but I bought into the hype and thought it was going to be amazing. In the end, it was just OK.
The horror film stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers who try to leave their troubled lives in Chicago behind and start again in their hometown in Mississippi, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
I will say that the film gets points for being an original concept. I liked how it mixed the supernatural elements with the power of music and race dynamics of the south.
And I’ll give credit to Michael B. Jordan for pulling double duty, but his performance wasn’t perfect and honestly, I think Lindsay Lohan did it better in “The Parent Trap.” There, I said it.
My biggest complaint about the movie is that it took SO long for anything interesting to happen. It seemed like we were halfway through the film before the horror aspects were introduced.
It just seems like the director, who also made “Black Panther” and “Creed,” bit off a little more than he could chew. He introduced a bunch of interesting themes that never went anywhere and it just collapsed into a pointless bloodbath like any other movie.
I didn’t particularly like this film, but I know a lot of other people did. Let me know what you thought in the comments, and follow Pop Commentary on social media for more pop culture reviews and news.
